Celebraciones del Día de la Cruz en Panchimalco

Cultura

In El Salvador, just like in most of Latin America, there is a mixture of cultures (mostly, indigenous, those groups that were here before the Europeans came, African and Spanish). Most Salvadorans are shaped by the Mayan/ Pipil culture as well as the Spanish (brought by the conquistadores) culture. Many of our traditions reflect this mixture. In the picture you can see a religous celebration: El día de la cruz. Men and women are wearing clothing that native people used to wear during the colony. Men used to wear a straw hat and white long-sleeved shirt and pants. Women used to wear long white or very colorful skirts and blouses embroidered along their necks.

The present

I feel like there are two countries within El Salvador because of its extreme social differences. In El Salvador, you can find nice hotels, beach or country clubs, golf courses (in such a small country and with high deforestation!), gourmet restaurants and shopping malls. All those nice areas can deceive visitors. However, there is also extreme poverty and high unemployement rates. Economically, the country stays in good shape because of all the Salvadorans that had to fleed the country during the civil war. They send remittances to their families back in El Salvador. That money is worth more than any other export. I will probably talk to your more about these topics in class. However, now I am going to show a few special places and costums that make our country special for me.
