Introduction:
This website was created mainly for my students and their parents. I'm hoping this will help us to keep in touch as well as to have more exposure to the Spanish language through the world wide web. Please e-mail me if you have any suggestion to improve any activities or the site.
My philosophy of teaching:
I believe learning a second language is possible for the majority of the human beings. It is a long process. Do you know how long it took you to start making your first sentences? Therefore, I believe my students can learn Spanish if they are willing to put the time. Motivation and attitude are essential in learning it. Therefore, it depends a lot on each student to make the learning happen. I like to prepare interesting and challenging lessons, so you and I can enjoy each class and our time together.
I will prepare my lesson plans following the standards given by the Kansas State Department of Education (based on the national standards). You can read them in detail in the Kansas Department of Education website (click on the circles):
Facts and figures about foreign languages
What do they mean for you?
Communication means that we will speak Spanish as much as possible. You and your classmates will practice dialogues, give short presentations, do role playing of possible real situations you might encounter, etc. Therefore, your participation is extremely important in order for you and your classmates to practice Spanish. I expect you to try to speak Spanish as much as possible in class as well as outside the classroom if it's possible.

Culture -Probably you have heard before that in order to learn a language you have to learn about the culture as well. This is very true. You can learn vocabulary and put it together with grammar rules, but soon you will realize that there are many things you cannot understand with just grammar rules and vocabulary. Therefore, we will study the wide cultural diversity that makes up the Hispanic world.
Connections means that we will study other subjects in Spanish! We will study common themes like environment, reading strategies, geography and others. We will probably review what you already know in other subject areas.

Comparisons -you are expected to compare and contrast languages (Spanish and English for most part) and cultures (Hispanic cultures and your culture). You will discover patterns, make predictions, and analyze similarities and differences across languages and cultures. You will definetely come to understand your native language and culture better through such comparisons.
Communities means that we will have activities that extend your classroom learning like: field trips, use of e-mail to communicate with others in Spanish.
Do you want to know how many people speak Spanish in your vecinities? Go to the language map. You can find updated information on languages spoken in the United Sates by states or even by counties or zip codes!
If you want to know much more about Spanish, there is a lot about the history and other interesting facts about Spanish in the United States at Wikipedia.
What Are the Benefits of Knowing a Second Language? Besides, being able to understand better other cultures, students of foreign languages score statistically higher on standardized tests conducted in English. In its 1992 report, College Bound Seniors: The 1992 Profile of SAT and Achievement Test Takers, the College Entrance Examination Board reported that students who averaged 4 or more years of foreign language study scored higher on the verbal section of the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) than those who had studied 4 or more years in any other subject area. In addition, the average mathematics score for individuals who had taken 4 or more years of foreign language study was identical to the score of those who had studied the same number of years of mathematics. These findings are consistent with College Board profiles for previous years.
