General Information
What is Directed Studies?
Directed Studies is a program aimed toward at-risk students at Lawrence High School. We believe that all students can succeed and are given every possible opportunity to do so. The students in this program have experienced failure in the past, and our intent is to help them become successful at Lawrence High School. Directed Studies plays a major role in reducing the drop out rate at LHS. We also are reducing the failure rate in the student’s current classes.
The program utilizes 12 computers and the PassKey study skills program. There are also tutors from the University of Kansas provided by Youth Educational Services that are in the classroom throughout the day to support the students.
We believe that all students can succeed and are given every possible opportunity to do so. All Directed Studies’ students will succeed; if they don’t it will be by their choice and they will know why they failed.
What is required of Directed Studies students?
Students making up failed credits are required to work with their subject teacher in order to meet the requirements of their specific subject. Students in "general" Directed Studies will have a grade based on the following criteria:
- 50% of the grade is based on Class Participation. This includes:
- Using class time appropriately
- Using the resources provided by the program
- Attendance
- Tardies
- 10% of the grade is based on use of the Student Planners. Organization is an extremely important like skill and it is proven to improve grades.
- 20% of the grade is based on using the PassKey computer program. It is the students choice to work on one of the 5 subjects: reading, writing, math, science, or social studies. Students are required to spend a minimum of 1 hour a week on the program.
- 20% of the grade is based on completion of the assigned journal entries. There is one journal entry assigned each week and they usually take students less than half and hour. Click on the link below to see the list of the assigned journal entries.
